Alkalinity is the buffering capacity of water and ensures stability of the pH value. If the alkalinity is too high, then adding acid or base has little to no effect on the pH value. If the alkalinity is too low, the smallest addition of acid or base will cause extreme pH changes. The recommended value is 80 to 120 mg / CaCO 3 .
